How to add a DMARC record in Namecheap

Add a DMARC record in Namecheap's Advanced DNS tab with the exact Host and Value to enter, what to do if you use Namecheap hosting, and how to check it works.

Quick answer

In your Namecheap account, open Domain List, select Manage next to your domain, and go to the Advanced DNS tab. Select Add New Record, choose TXT Record, enter _dmarc as the Host, paste v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@yourbusiness.com as the Value, and select Save all changes. This works when your domain uses Namecheap BasicDNS, PremiumDNS or FreeDNS.

If your domain's DNS is managed at Namecheap, adding DMARC takes one TXT record and about ten minutes. This guide gives you the exact click path and values, and flags the one example on Namecheap's help page you shouldn't copy.

Check what your domain already has before you start.

Is your DNS managed at Namecheap?

Namecheap's Advanced DNS tab only controls your records when your domain uses Namecheap BasicDNS, PremiumDNS or FreeDNS. You can see which is in use under Nameservers on your domain's Domain tab.

  • If it says Namecheap Web Hosting DNS, add the record in cPanel's Zone Editor instead.
  • If it shows custom nameservers, such as Cloudflare's, add the record at that company. Our Cloudflare DMARC guide covers that case.

DMARC also relies on SPF and DKIM. Set those up for every service that sends email as your domain, or your real email can fail DMARC once you tighten the policy. The free SPF checker shows your current SPF record.

What values do I enter in Namecheap?

  • TypeTXT
    Name / Host_dmarc
Valuev=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@yourbusiness.comTTL: leave it on Automatic. Change dmarc@yourbusiness.com to an inbox you check.

v=DMARC1 marks the record as DMARC. p=none turns on monitoring without blocking anything. rua=mailto: sets where daily summary reports go.

How do I add a DMARC record in Namecheap?

  1. Sign in to your Namecheap account and choose Domain List on the left.
  2. Select Manage next to your domain.
  3. Open the Advanced DNS tab.
  4. Look under Host Records for an existing TXT record with the host _dmarc. If there is one, edit its value instead of adding another.
  5. Otherwise, select Add New Record and choose TXT Record as the Type.
  6. Enter _dmarc as the Host. Don't add your domain name after it.
  7. Paste v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@yourbusiness.com into Value, with your own address.
  8. Leave TTL on Automatic, then select Save all changes.

Namecheap says new records normally take about 30 minutes to take effect. Re-run the DMARC checker after that to confirm there's exactly one record.

Check SPF, DKIM and your website too

DMARC works best alongside SPF and DKIM. A free scan checks all three, plus your certificate and security headers, in one plain-English report.

What mistakes break a DMARC record in Namecheap?

  • The Host includes the domain, such as _dmarc.yourbusiness.com. Namecheap adds the domain itself, so the record ends up in the wrong place.
  • The Host is @, which puts the record on your main domain, where providers don't look for DMARC.
  • Two DMARC records exist. Providers ignore DMARC when there's more than one, so keep a single _dmarc record.
  • The changes were never saved. Namecheap only applies new records after you select Save all changes.
  • The reporting address is missing mailto:, or the inbox doesn't exist yet, so reports bounce.
  • The domain uses other nameservers, so records in Namecheap's Advanced DNS tab aren't used.

How do I tighten the policy later?

After two to four weeks of reports showing your real email passing, edit the same record:

  1. Open Domain List, select Manage next to your domain, and open Advanced DNS.
  2. Edit the _dmarc TXT record and change p=none to p=quarantine, keeping the rest of the value.
  3. Select Save all changes.

Give quarantine a few weeks before you consider p=reject, and check with your team that expected emails still arrive. Our guide to reading DMARC reports explains what to look for.

What should you do next?

Common questions

What do I put in the Host field for DMARC in Namecheap?

Just _dmarc. Namecheap says the domain name itself shouldn't go in the Host field, even if a service tells you to include it. Namecheap adds your domain, so the record lives at _dmarc.yourbusiness.com.

Namecheap's help page shows a DMARC record with p=reject. Should I copy it?

No. That example starts at the strictest policy, which can block your own email if any sender isn't set up yet. It also uses the pct tag, which RFC 9989 retired. Start at p=none, review reports, then step up.

My domain uses Namecheap hosting. Where do I add the record?

If your domain points to Namecheap Web Hosting DNS, Namecheap says to add DNS records in cPanel instead. Look for the Zone Editor in cPanel and add the same TXT record there.

How long until the record works?

Namecheap says new host records normally take about 30 minutes to take effect. Your first DMARC reports usually arrive within a day or two after that.

I bought the domain at Namecheap but my DNS is on Cloudflare. Where do I add it?

Add it at Cloudflare. Records only take effect at the company your nameservers point to, so a record in Namecheap's Advanced DNS tab won't be used. Our Cloudflare DMARC guide walks through it.
