Terms of use
The plain-English terms for using CyberVigil: which domains you can check, what the free check is and isn't, and the limits of our responsibility.
Last updated Oct 23, 2026
These terms explain the rules for using CyberVigil. We've kept them as plain as we can. If you have a question about them, email hello@cybervigil.ai.
Who are we?
CyberVigil (cybervigil.ai) is a free website and email security checkup for small businesses. It's operated by Routeless. When these terms say "we" or "us", they mean CyberVigil and Routeless. "You" means the person using CyberVigil.
By using CyberVigil, you agree to these terms. If you use CyberVigil on behalf of a business, you're agreeing for that business too, and you confirm you're allowed to do so.
Which domains can I check?
Only check domains you own, manage, or have permission to check. That includes your own business, or a client who has asked you to review their setup.
Our checks are passive and read only public information, as explained on our methodology page. We still ask you to respect this rule. Website owners can see our requests in their logs.
When you use the free check:
- Stay within the rate limits. Don't script, automate, or bulk-run checks.
- Don't try to get around rate limits, the human check, or any other safeguard.
- Don't use CyberVigil to target, harass, or prepare an attack on anyone.
We may limit, refuse, or block any check or visitor to protect the service or the sites being checked.
What is CyberVigil, and what isn't it?
CyberVigil gives you general information about your public security settings. It's an outside-in snapshot of your website, email, and domain at the moment we checked.
CyberVigil is not a penetration test, security audit, or certification. It isn't a guarantee that your business, website, or email is safe from attack, and it isn't a way to become compliant with any law, standard, or insurance requirement. It also isn't legal, compliance, or professional security advice.
Results can be incomplete or wrong. DNS changes take time to spread, some servers respond differently to different visitors, and some checks are best-effort by design. The AI-written summary in a report can also contain mistakes. Always confirm important results before you act on them.
You're responsible for any changes you make to your website, DNS, or email settings. Before editing a record, write down its current value so you can undo the change if something breaks. If you're not sure, ask your hosting provider, IT contractor, or our team.
Who can see my reports?
Each report has a private link. Anyone with that link can view it, so share it only with people you trust, like your web developer. Reports describe public information about a domain and don't show who ran the check. Our privacy policy explains what we store and how to ask us to delete a report.
Are paid plans available?
Not yet. Our Monitoring and Guided Help plans are opening soon. You can join the waitlist on our pricing page.
Joining the waitlist is free. It doesn't create a subscription, and we won't charge you anything. When paid plans open, they'll come with their own terms and pricing, which you'll see and agree to before you're charged.
What counts as acceptable use?
Don't use CyberVigil to:
- Break any law or anyone else's rights.
- Overload, disrupt, or interfere with the service.
- Probe or test our own systems for vulnerabilities without our permission. If you find a security issue, please email us so we can fix it.
- Copy, scrape, or republish our guides or reports at scale.
- Misrepresent your results, for example by claiming CyberVigil certified or approved your site.
- Use our name or logo in a way that suggests we endorse you.
- Submit false information or someone else's contact details in our forms.
Who owns the content?
The CyberVigil website, software, design, guides, and report format belong to Routeless or the people who license them to us.
Your reports are yours to use. You can save them, share them, and send them to whoever helps with your website. You're also welcome to quote short parts of our guides, as long as you link back to the original page.
Some data comes from third parties under their own terms. For example, Phishing.Database is published under the MIT license, and URLhaus is run by abuse.ch.
What about third-party links and services?
Our guides and reports link to other websites, like your DNS host's help pages. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their content or practices.
Our step-by-step instructions describe other companies' dashboards as we last checked them. Providers change their menus often, so the steps may not match exactly. If you spot an outdated step, please let us know.
Is there a warranty?
No. CyberVigil is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises of any kind about the service. That includes promises that it's accurate, complete, uninterrupted, fit for a particular purpose, or that it will find every issue.
What are the limits of our responsibility?
To the fullest extent the law allows, Routeless and its team aren't responsible for indirect or consequential losses. That includes lost profits, lost data, lost business, or damage to reputation, caused by using CyberVigil or by being unable to use it.
For any other claim connected to CyberVigil, our total responsibility is limited to the greater of what you paid us for the service in the 12 months before the claim, or US$50. The free check costs nothing, so for most people that limit is US$50.
Some places don't allow these limits. If that's true where you live, they apply only as far as your local law permits.
If you break these terms, for example by checking a domain without permission, and that leads to a claim against us, you're responsible for the costs that result.
Can these terms change?
Yes. We may update these terms as CyberVigil grows, for example when paid plans open. When we do, we'll change the updated date at the top of this page. If you keep using CyberVigil after a change, you're agreeing to the updated terms.
We may also change, pause, or stop any part of the service. You can stop using CyberVigil at any time.
